wilco day

It was a week of windstorms – downed trees and blowing leaf piles, gray clouds and the sun low in the sky by three. Here’s November, somehow. And then this morning I woke up and it was cold and clear, and I could see my breath. It’s reassuring.

No one is calling me back about jobs. Not even for an interview. Not even when I am just right, not even when the pay is shit, not even when I follow up. There was a time in my life when I thought I’d be Secretary of the Interior and these days I can’t get a $10-an-hour job shuffling paper for a small nonprofit. They don’t even want to meet me. I’m kind of at a loss here.

Here it is, Friday morning. My next obligation is at 6, and I could even skip that without anyone knowing. All week I’ve been writing cover letters, painting, reading, figuring out creative things to do with rice and eggs. I’m trying not to give in to the overwhelming urge to rent season three of the West Wing and sit in bed all day feeling pathetic and entertained. I'm a week past my due date for Plan B, but I never got around to making one.

I'm open to suggestions.

Have you considered looking for jobs in Austin, TX? I hear they have free pecans and welding there.

You have many, many options, but they just might not be the exact one you've planned to go with. I'm making you one of my lists.

And, of course, Richmond, VA is a fantastic place to live and work. Especially the Fan, which I lamely did not take you to.

Shed your standards, swallow a little pride, and bulk up on desperation ... then apply for those jobs you don't like/don't want/don't think you should commit to. May as well be employed while you look for another job, right? Judging from our combined Portland Job Search results, there's little likelihood of finding something great right off the bat. Take what you can get and keep looking relentlessly.

One thing that can help 'right now' with the money intake is the joy of seasonal "holiday work". Yes, stores, particularly at (ugh) the mall, need additional workers during the holiday season.

But here's the thing. It's completely temporary. You won't have to work on your birthday. It's cash in your pocket. Sometimes? overtime pay. Flexible hours, usually. and really, will fill the time.

oh, trust me, the standards have indeed been shed. in the past two weeks i have failed to get jobs as a personal assistant, an ebay lister, a yard worker, and of course an array of food service work.

i haven't gone near the mall. i just can't do it. but as my excuse i will say that most retail hiring seasonal employees require that said employees work on xmas day. and as far as i'm concerned, the whole reason for the existence of credit cards is so that i don't spend my 30th birthday selling crap at a mall.
